BD acquires Scanwell Health to promote digital at-home testing

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), a prominent medical technology firm, has reportedly announced acquisition of the private company involved in at-home medical tests that are smartphone-enabled, Scanwell Health Inc.

As per sources, BD has joined forces with Scanwell to create an app which can be used along with the newly launched BD Veritor At-Home COVID-19 Test. This test is the first COVID-19 at-home test which interprets results by using the smartphone camera and app along with removing the human subjectivity in the visually read at-home antigen tests.

Reportedly, BD will use Scanwell as its first digital platform for creating diagnostic tests for infections like COVID-19, influenza A+B, and a related menu to manage chronic diseases and detect infections via an at-home test.

Dave Hickey, Life Sciences President for BD stated that the pandemic has led to a speedy shift towards advanced care scenarios for which BD is all set to provide smart, at-home diagnostic ecosystem to back up the conventional and telehealth consumers and providers.

Dave added that this acquisition will allow BD to scale and grow the digital capabilities through its own firm by developing transformative at-home solutions for the present and future.

For the uninitiated, the Scanwell app distinguishes itself amongst the other market players for at-home COVID-19 test kits as no other firm uses the phone’s camera to capture the test image which is later on interpreted and analyzed through the app.

Apparently, it has been recorded that the other firms use smartphones only in the process of conducting the home test as compared to the BD Veritor At-Home test which uses smartphones to analyze the test results digitally and provide a positive or negative result.

Additionally, the app can also store the test results and provide report to businesses, schools, public health authorities and others.

However, the transactional terms of the deal have not been revealed yet and the transaction is anticipated to be irrelevant to BD’s fiscal financial results by 2022.
