DART network to receive the most sustainable fleet of trains by Alstom

Alstom has reportedly agreed to a ten-year contract with Iarnród Éireann for nearly 750 electric brand new X’trapolis rail car transportation for Ireland’s Dublin Area Rapid Transit, DART network. The contract includes an order for 19 five-car commuter trains including 13 battery trains initially, which will cost around €270 million, and a support services contract for 15 years.

As per speculations, Alstom’s CEO and Chairman Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Chief Executive of the National Transport Authority, Anne Graham, and Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan T.D., along with Jim Meade, Iarnród Éireann’s Chief Executive have formally inked the contract.

The agreement will observe the development and replacement of the DART trains inclusive of the DART+ programme funded by the National Transport Authority governed by the National Development Plan 2021-2030.

Nick Crossfield, Alstom Managing Director Ireland and UK, stated that the new electric and battery electric X’trapolis fleet is a major step for a crucial market like Ireland which provides railways with more sustainable way of transportation while transforming the customer experience in the Greater Dublin area.

Nick quoted that this agreement also strengthens Alstom’s place in the global leading supplier and innovator of sustainable movement technologies.

According to credible sources, the initial order is for 6 five-car electric multiple units and 13 five-car battery-electric multiple units which can travel beyond 80 kilometers outside the electrified network under battery power.

Meanwhile, the reserved energy in the battery system will be recharged through fast charging stations at selected locations by regaining braking energy when the train is moving, and this will provide emission- free connectivity and capacity prior to electrification of the full DART + network.

According to reports, Alstom’s successful modular X’trapolis train platform has sold 5500 vehicles and will be tailored for the DART+ programme.

For the record, Alstom is the pioneer of smart and sustainable mobility with plethora of green movement services including the first hydrogen train of the world and battery electric trains which have already been sold in Germany.
