FDA to issue heart inflammation warning on mRNA COVID-19 vaccines

  • The CDC has reported increasing cases of heart inflammation among patients jabbed with the 2nd dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines
  • The agency has also advised doctors & hospitals to check for symptoms like pericarditis and myocarditis

The US Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) has announced that it will update its fact sheets on the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, including a rare heart inflammation as a possible side-effect among teenagers and young adults getting their 2nd vaccine dose. According to FDA official, Doran Fink, a warning statement would be added in the factsheets for health professionals, vaccine recipients, and caregivers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised doctors and hospitals to be on the lookout for conditions including myocarditis and pericarditis. This comes after the CDC’s advisory panel discovered that vaccines may cause heart inflammation in adolescents, however, the benefits are more in contrast to its risks. Those who reported heart inflammation after vaccination usually recovered from its symptoms, claims the health regulator.

The US Department of Health and Human Services has meanwhile said that the side-effects related to heart is very uncommon, and that COVID-19 vaccines are effective and safe. The agency issued a statement saying, they urge everyone age 12 and above who qualifies to get the jab under Emergency Use Authorization to get vaccinated.

According to the CDC's data, cases of heart inflammation are more common in males in the week following the second dosage of the COVID-19 vaccine. These occurrences are prominent among individuals in their teens and early twenties, according to the report. A total of 309 hospitalizations were identified with this side-effect by the health regulator, of which 295 have been discharged.
