Germany, Australia ink hydrogen pact to uplift lower-emissions tech

Two major countries, Germany and Australia, have reportedly announced inking a mutual partnership on hydrogen production and trade to ease and streamline renewable energy-based hydrogen supply chain between the two countries.

Reports suggest that Education and Research Minister-Anja Karliczek, and Economic Minister, Peter Altmaier signed a letter of intent to create a ‘Germany Australia Hydrogen Agreement’ with Angus Taylor, Australian Energy and Emissions Reduction Minister.

It was potentially mentioned in a statement that the alliance is all about about enabling the ingress of sustainably produced hydrogen in relevant volumes and capacities, which stands as a pivotal factor to reach the country’s stringent climate targets.

In fact, Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison cited that international collaboration has been the key for getting new energy technologies like hydrogen to commercial parity. Morrison added that the company is moving ahead in its ambition of producing highly economical clean hydrogen in the world, which is expected to transform mining, transport, manufacturing, and resources at overseas and home levels.

As per credible reports, various energy behemoths including Uniper and RWE have begun exploring the possible new trade routes for hydrogen from Australia and other places.

Importantly, Germany, had in 2020, introduced a 9 billion euro hydrogen strategy, which apparently, forms a part of wider EU strategies. The policy has been based on the assumption that 80% of the country’s hydrogen requirements are likely to be imported in the longer term.

Alongside, Australia has also publicized its plans of collaborating with Japan to fund initiatives which would help fuel their respective economies’ evolution to net zero emissions in the near future.

Meanwhile, the country has so far refused to match commitments by the United Kingdom, the US, and other economies aiming net zero target by 2050, or increasing its emission reduction goal for 2030.
