Google Pay partners with Pine Labs to launch Tap to Pay for UPI

Google Pay, in partnership with Pine Labs, has launched the feature Tap to Pay for UPI, which aims to bring the convenience of Tap to Pay to UPI. This feature was so far available only for card payments.

Reportedly, in order to make a payment, a user will only have to tap their phone on the POS terminal and authenticate the payment through their phones by using UPI PIN. This will allow the process to be virtually instant in comparison to scanning a QR code or entering the mobile number linked with UPI.

Sajith Sivanandan, Business Head at Google Pay and Next Billion User Initiatives, Google PAC, commented that the growth of fintech in India is penning down the playbook for the world by allowing payments with UPI and innovating it with flows that make transaction time virtually zero.

Sajith mentioned that Tap to Pay for UPI poses huge implications for high traffic retail shops with queue management problems touted to be profoundly minimised and taking online payments at POS without cards.

As per sources, the function will be available to all the UPI users utilizing their NFC-enabled Android smartphone to conduct payment using any Android POS terminal by Pine Labs throughout the nation.

This effort was initially led by Reliance Retail and will now be available at other big merchants like Starbucks and Future Retail.

Kush Mehra, Chief Business Officer at Pine Labs stated that UPI has escalated in a big way in India with nearly INR 8.26 lakh crore of transactions in December 2021 alone.

Kush stated that the firm is pleased to partner with Google Pay and allow tap to pay for UPI dealings on Pine Lab Android POS terminals.

This will reportedly strengthen the acceptance of UPI in India and appeal to users, particularly amongst the young population who are inclined for contactless online payments.
