Los Angeles health authority cautions about rising cases of Covid-19

The LA’s (Los Angeles) County Department of Public Health has reportedly warned against a substantial increase in Covid-19 metrics as, in the last three days, more than 12,000 new cases have been registered.

As per the Department, the largest county of the United States and home to around 10 million residents, LA had recorded 14 deaths on Monday and 2,476; 4,750 and 5,152 cases on May 23; 22 and 21 respectively, bringing the overall caseload to 2,942,149 and death toll to 32,086, as per the new reports.

For sequenced samples collected in the week ending April 30, the positive cases recorded were of the Omicron variant and the BA.2.12.1 subvariant, which is more contagious than BA.2. Moreover, the existing chief sub-variant in Los Angeles County, is becoming more common said the Department.

With the metrics of Covid-19 increasing, including hospitalizations, cases, outbreaks in high-risk settings, and the test positivity rate, bringing in more protections is required to reduce the risk of transmission and severe illness.

The average number of daily new cases reported in the last seven days has increased to 3,843 as compared to 1,436 which were reported one month ago. The state also observed an increase of around 168 per cent and the seven-day test positivity rate on Monday was 3 per cent, almost double from what it was a month ago, said the Department.

According to officials, the increasing number of cases has translated to a rising number of people getting ill severely and requiring hospitalization, as the average number of Covid patients every day in the hospitals of Los Angeles County over the last seven days was 378, an increase of around 72% as compared to a month ago.

Furthermore, the county has extended its requirement of wearing the mask on public transit and at transportation hubs last weekend amid the newest coronavirus wave.
