Researchers develop an ultra-white paint that could help save energy

Researchers at Purdue University have reportedly developed an ultra-white paint that could potentially decrease the need for air conditioning, reduce global warming, fight climate change, and save energy.

If sources are to be believed, the newly discovered paint was invented by Xiulin Ruan, a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University along with his students, after 7 years of exhaustive research.

Interestingly, while commercially available white paint tends to get warmer instead of cooler and can reflect only 80-90% of the sunlight, the new paint can reflect approximately 98.1% of the solar radiation in addition to releasing infrared heat.

A surface coated with this ultra-white paint can lower temperatures than that of its surroundings without consuming any additional energy since it absorbs less amount of heat as compared to what it emits.

Researchers from Purdue University have claimed that if this paint is used to cover an entire roof area of approximately 1000 square feet, it could generate a cooling power of around 10 kilowatts, which is more powerful than most air conditioners used at homes.

The paint, which earned a Guinness World Record for being the whitest paint across the world, has a high amount of barium sulfate. The different particle sizes of barium sulfate in the paint play an important role in scattering the light of the sun to a wider range.

Purdue University’s researchers have also filed patent applications for this paint and have joined hands with a company to boost production. The white paint is likely to be available in worldwide markets soon.

This invention could prove to be revolutionary in the forthcoming years since the paint’s capability to eliminate the need for air conditioning and decrease power consumption will help in fighting climate change in the long term.
