Samsung & Hyundai Motors to jointly develop automotive semiconductors

The two companies will partner on developing next-gen image sensors, battery management chips, and application processors for in-car entertainment systems

The automotive sector is experiencing a shortage in semiconductor chips and components which is causing in delay in vehicle production. In an attempt to resolve this issue, Samsung Electronics has partnered with Hyundai Motor Co., which will involve them collaborating with the Govt. of South Korea and other agencies.

As per reports, the two firms will be collaborating with the Korean Electronics Technology Institute, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute to focus on supporting local supply chains and obtaining required automotive semiconductors that are used in the production of vehicles in the country.

Sources believe that the partnership, if successful, will foster the South Korean automotive sector as well as have several positive global implications. Under the partnership, Samsung and Hyundai will develop next-gen super-efficient semiconductors, image sensors, battery management chips, and application processors for in-car entertainment systems.

This partnership along with other developments made by the two firms demonstrate their long-term efforts to ramp up developments in the automotive industry. The recent move could involve initiatives like culmination of the corporate social responsibility of the two firms with a common goal of establishing a strong supply base for local automotive semiconductor production in the South Korean market.

Samsung is already pursuing research in the development of an alternative wafer production template, like on 12-inch wafers, that could have a considerable influence on the overall chip-making process. While in an attempt to resolve the supply chain issues incurred during global chip shortage, the company had announced plans to expand its existing chip manufacturing plants.

Samsung has also made considerable advancements in developing innovative solutions like new PixCell LED intelligent headlight technology specifically designed for the automotive industry.
